Before you decide to buy a multi fuel or central heating cooker, there are a number of points you should consider. We hope to make your choice easier by addressing all your queries below.
Wamsler multi fuel cookers can be heated with wood and briquettes. Wood is better in environmental terms as the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere is the same as is taken in through plant growth. Wood is a sustainable raw material. The residue from burning is relatively low in comparison to other fuel types; it amounts to about 0.6% to 1.0 % of weight. Most importantly one should know that wood burning does not additionally burden the environment, if dry wood is used and if oxygen is supplied to fire in the right way. Effective combustibility is an important factor – and that’s only reached when the wood has a maximum moisture content of 16-18%
| Wood requirements | = | required warmth per m2 x heating living space m2 x operating hours calorific value of fuel x annual effectiveness |
Example calculation:
| Wood requirements | = | 0.0814 kW/m2 x 140 m2 x 1800 h 1500 kWh/m3 x 0.70 |
= | 19.5 m3 |
Wamsler multi fuel cookers are slow burning cookers and have no automatic output regulator. Some have an adjustable fire box and are suitable for heating, cooking, baking and roasting.
Shallow fire box
The space between the grate and the hotplate is maximum 300 mm.
Deep fire box
The space between the grid and the hotplate is minimum 490 mm.
Continuous burning ability
A minimum burning time in which it is not necessary to add fuel. Remaining embers are ready for further heating.
Burning time with rated heat output using coal
One loading of fuel lasts a minimum of 2 hours under test conditions.
Burning time at maximum output using wood
One loading of fuel lasts a minimum of 0.5 hours and a maximum of 1.5 hours under test conditions.
Burning time with low heat using coal
One loading of fuel lasts a minimum of 12 hours under test conditions.
Efficiency using coal and wood
The efficiency under test conditions with coal will be at least 70%, with wood 65%.
Flue Temperature
Under test conditions the temperature in the flue connector must not exceed 400°C.
Wamsler central heating cookers are suitable for open vented gravity fed systems. They are suitable for baking and roasting and can be integrated into a fitted kitchen with the use of a spacer.
The fire box
Can be fully adjusted from a shallow to a deep fire box.
Burning time at maximum output with coal
One loading of fuel lasts a minimum of 3 hours under test conditions.
Burning time with low heat using coal
One loading of fuel lasts a minimum of 12 hours under test conditions.
Efficiency using coal
The efficiency under test conditions with coal will be at least 75%.
Flue Temperature
Under test conditions the temperature in the flue connector must not exceed 400°C.
Since January 1996 all multi fuel heating and cooking appliances used and installed in Germany have to carry the Ü-symbol. This is a legal requirement according to building regulations in the Bundesländer (all areas of Germany).
In order to carry the Ü-symbol appliances must be tested at a designated testing centre according to the current technical regulations and the DIN standard for multi fuel cookers.
All Wamsler appliances to which these regulations apply are DIN-tested and are marked with the Ü-symbol (since 1st January 1996). They comply, therefore with the legal requirements.
For a faultless operation, all appliances which require the burning of wood or coal must have a sufficient amount of air. Because the cooker whilst burning takes out air from the room, it is important to ensure that windows and exterior doors let sufficient air in. Or permanent air supply to be installed. This is guaranteed when you have 4 m3 of room space per kW heat output. If the volume is less, a vent to other rooms can be installed.*
Appliances should not be placed sideways or in front of walls which are made of flammable material or covered by such material, when the distance is less than 200 mm. Flammable or temperature-sensitive material should not be placed within 800 mm of the front of the cooker.
Wall cupboards placed over the cookers must be at least 700 mm away from the hotplate. The distance from the side of other items of wood or synthetic furniture must be at least 200 mm.
If the floor covering is made from an inflammable material, a non-inflammable underlay must be fitted. The underlay must cover an area of at least 500 mm to the front and 300 mm to the side of the fire box opening of the cooker.
Solid fuel appliances, connectors and chimneys must fit together in order to avoid danger or excessive disturbance. These 3 elements constitute a working unit. Should one single element malfunction, the whole installation will not operate properly.
It is, therefore necessary when carrying out calculations and planning as well as building, that existing regulations are followed.
The determined chimney must be able to bear a capacity of 400°C.
The connecting pipe between cooker and chimney should have the same diameter as the flue connector on the appliance. Chimneys should be protected from cooling. This is particularly important for flexible liners.
Pre fabricated chimneys can be used if there is no existing chimney stack.
It is essential to consult the responsible chimney specialist before installation.
